New Year Same Me

We hear it every year... New Year, New Me!

I totally get it. When one year comes to a close and a new one begins, we want it to be better than the year before. We want a new diet, a new house, a new income. Maybe we want a new relationship, or wardrobe, or just a new project to keep us busy. New year, new life.

Yes, with the coming of a new year, it is a great opportunity to start over and try new things. HOWEVER. I want to challenge my fellow perfectionists with a different form of thinking. And trust me when I say this, I'm preaching to myself more than anyone else.

What if, instead of thinking we need to become someone new, we chose to dive deeper into who we already are? What if we base our goals for the new year off of what parts of us we want to see grow, instead of what parts of us we want to change?

I've chosen for the last two years now to use the term 'intentions" instead of "resolutions". To resolve something means to fix a problem, and you my friend, are not a problem. Everything you have experienced up to now, the challenges you've faced, the habits you've formed, all have been a part of the journey to becoming who you are today. None of that journey is a problem. But some of the habits that have formed on your path may have lead you away from the person you have been called to be. If we take this year to choose to dive deeper into who God really created us to be, it will be obvious in which areas we need to grow.

This year, instead of changing myself, I'm simply choosing to redirect myself. I don't need to change who I am, I just need to grow. Growing means pruning, so don't think that intentionality doesn't mean sacrifice. To grow out of bad habits, there are some things that I will need to prune from my life. But because I know that it will lead to a truer and more honest version of me, I am so willing.

I know I wont be perfect, and I hope you know that too. Striving for perfection is a moo point. It's like a cow's opinion. It's moo.

But growth leads to new colors, new leaves, new heights. Its the same plant, it just looks different. So this time around, I'm excited to pursue the challenges to become more myself than ever before. New Year, Same Me.
